As seasons change, there’s a noticeable difference in the atmosphere of any high school hallway. Warmer temperatures provide a significant biological and psychological boost for teenagers.
Teenagers are prone to mood swings, often driven by hormonal shifts. Sunlight plays a direct role in stabilizing these mood swings. Exposure to sunlight triggers the release of serotonin, the feel-good hormone that helps teens feel focused. Many teens spend winter months indoors, leading to low Vitamin D levels. Warmer weather encourages outdoor activities which helps teenagers significantly stay off their cellphones and enjoy the fresh air.
Warmer weather also improves teenager’s sleep cycles. Some teenager’s internal clocks naturally shift later; morning sun helps reset the body’s clock that makes it easier to fall asleep at a reasonable hour. This not only ensures that teenagers are getting all the sleep they need but also improves the quality of REM sleep which is essential for growth and recovery.
Warmer temperatures allow an increase in physical activity in teenagers because it becomes more accessible. The benefits are reduced cortisol, social sport, and body image. Being outdoors lowers stress hormones, encourages hangouts and teamwork and focuses on movement.
While the school year often continues into the summer season, the shift in weather transitions to an increase in moods and motivation to find the year strong to get to summer. This improves productivity and focus for those final exams and projects.
There is an undeniable shift in energy that happens when tan lines appear. For many teenage girls a tan is more than just a change, it is a boost of confidence. For many teens struggling with acne, a tan can act as a filter smoothing out the appearance on the skin. This leads to a massive drop in social anxiety. Also many girls feel they need less makeup or styling when they have a natural glow.
The “high” felt after a day in the sun isn’t just a result of a good music or nice view but instead the body produces beta-endorphins (feel good chemicals released). These endorphins help lower stress hormones and provide a much needed sense of calm to these overwhelmed teenagers.
While the benefits are plentiful, it’s always a good idea to wear sun protection and keep yourself hydrated. High energy from warmer weather is great but a bad sunburn or heat exhaustion can harm you very quickly.
