Lately, it feels like Hollywood has has been hitting the copy and paste button with each new movie. Everywhere you look, there’s a new remake, sequel, or live action version of a movie we’ve already seen. From Devil Wears Prada 2 to live action Moana and The Little Mermaid, it seems like original movies are becoming increasingly hard to find.
Studios love remakes because they’re the safe option. A movie that already has fans has a lesser risk than making something completely new, and it’s more likely to make more money at the box office. Social media attention also helps, people love to share their excitement and reactions when a classic comes back to life.
But for some viewers this can become a little frustrating. Sure, it’s fun to see a favorite story in a new way, but it can also feel like Hollywood is running out of ideas. Original movies, like Everything Everywhere, All At Once, or Spider Man: Into the Spider Verse, often surprise us and show fresh stories, new worlds, and unique characters but they’re becoming less common.
Some fans argue that remakes can bring old stories to new generations, while others say it’s time for studios to take more creative risks. Either way, it’s clear that Hollywood is playing it safe, and audiences are starting to notice. Maybe the real challenge for the film industry isn’t making remakes it’s remembering how to make something completely new and exciting again.
