Description:
The high school has come up with this 3 year schedule to follow for school renovations a long time ago, but now it is actually being followed out. This includes things like having a card-access security system at the TV studio. The community has recently been supporting this renovation bond brought up by the high school. In order to do this renovation the school was asking for 58.2 million dollars and this has since been approved. The goal is that everything will be completed hopefully by the fall of 2026. These renovations include a science-research room fully equipped, broadcasting studio, outdoor instructional area, ect.(Newsday). These are just the renovations regarding learning; they are also including things to improve athletics. There will be the construction of outdoor basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts. So there is such a vast plan to help improve students’ school experience. There are so many other changes included in this bond too.
Why does the High School need this?
The high school is in need of these changes because it would further how the school is able to accommodate their students. One example of this is that before there had been 7 fully functioning tennis courts, but last year they decided that two of the courts at the middle school were unplayable. Also the picture to the right is showing what the courts looked like before reconstruction began. So the varsity tennis teams were left with 5 functional courts. However now it is the plan to create 10 new courts with markings that go with pickleball. Superintendent Dr. Murphy stated, “You can be 10 years old or you can be 100 years old and still play.” The progress has already been shown with this part of the bond. During winter break they started construction and have since made much progress. The old courts have been removed and it looks like they are soon going to create the new ones. This has been a project that has been in development for a long time and is only now being implemented with the endorsement of the bond.
How will it affect taxpayers?
There are various ways that the bond being approved will affect the community. The bond is for 58.2 million dollars so when it was voted to be approved by the community it was known that there would be changes in taxes. It has been determined that due the bond each taxpayer will face an increase of 15 dollars per year for every 100,000 dollars in home value(Newsday). Which makes sense because in order for change to occur there needs to be funds to support it. Most of the time taxpayers wouldn’t vote for a bond such as this to be approved, but the whole community understood how important these changes are to help the students of Hauppauge.
What does the community think?
Last year the community discussed the topic of this bond and how it was going to improve education and athletics. The community passed this bond in an 807-278 vote. Meaning that 75% of voters were for the bond being carried out to help the community as a whole. That these changes won’t just focus on students, but the whole community like the tennis courts show. More importantly, because this bond means changes in both the middle and high schools voters were more prone to supporting the bond. Interesting fact is that usually the school is able to pay off its bonds in about 20 years(Messenger Papers). This is saying that it would pay off in the end. These big changes mean that in the future when the school has all of these new amenities it will be worth the money that it took only 20 years to pay off.
