Overview–

The complex relationships of family, friends, and the inhabitants of Stars Hollow drew people to view each week and had them clambering years later for the unfulfilled finale. Gilmore Girls is an early 2000’s comedy and drama. It originally aired in October of 2000. As more seasons were produced of the show, the popularity grew. Even to this day, it is a teen drama classic. In addition, it is widely known as a multigenerational drama, with topics and situations relatable to teens and adults through the main characters Rory and Lorelai. The daughter, Rory, gives teens the ability to relate to the character’s situations and decisions. However, the mother, Lorelai, makes it so that adults can relate to the show too. The show centers around the relationship between a single teen mother, Lorelai Gilmore, and Rory, her daughter. The series also includes a mother daughter dynamic with Lorelai and her mother, Emily. This series includes themes of family, friends, and just life in general. The show is about how a small-town girl gets thrown into her mother’s former rich lifestyle. The audience is taken through the daughter’s life as she attends high school and gets accepted into college making the show relatable to teens. The part of the show that focuses on Lorelai is about how she achieves independent goals even though she had Rory at such a young age. The inn she manages is even called the independence Inn. These are just a few reasons to tune into the amazing show called Gilmore Gilmore. 

Favorites–

I first started to watch Gilmore Girls when I was 12 and since then it has been my favorite comfort show. I have a tradition that I watch it every fall now too. The main character Rory is one of the main reasons I first took up Journalism as an elective. One of my favorite episodes of the series is called “You Jump, I Jump, Jack”. Out of all seven seasons this is my personal favorite episode because it shows how taking risks in life can be beneficial. Most of the episode focuses on Rory trying to get information about a secret society, called the Life and Death Brigade, from a guy named Logan to write an article for the Yale school paper. Logan, part of this secret society, is also the one to tell her to stop hiding from the world and watching others live, but to do it for herself when she claims that a journalist just observes. However, Logan ends up rebutting this statement by stating famous journalists who have participated and wrote about what they encountered. He then goes on to imply about that fear shouldn’t stop you from doing what you want. “People can live a hundred years without living for a minute. You climb up here with me, it’s one less minute you haven’t lived.” This is just one of the many great episodes that include a life changing lesson.  

Writer–

Amy Sherman-Palladino is known for being an amazing television writer. Many people would go on to describe her as a character, someone who mainly writes women’s stories. Showing their perspective on life and how it affects their actions. She has written pieces like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Gimore Girls. A fun fact about Gilmore Girls is that she wrote the show through her perspective when focusing on Lorelai. Similarly, she didn’t start writing for the show Roseanne until after her dance career ended. She joined the cast of Roseanne for 6 seasons. More often than not, her writing includes pop culture allusions and comedy from the past and present.  This wasn’t the path her life was expected to take, before her writing career she was a classical dancer. She trained from the age of four. She started her career, like her mother, as a dancer. However her dad was a comedian which most likely influenced her later writing for television. As a dancer she received a callback for the musical Cats. Since her dancing career didn’t take off she developed her other love, writing.  When she left her dancing career behind she started writing for the show Roseanne.  She ended up writing dramas and pitching the idea to television stations. This is just a summarized version of Amy Sherman-Palladino’s legacy.

Why watch?

Gilmore Girls is a series that is definitely worth giving a chance. It contains various comedic references and allusions to famous movies and people. The show has Alexis Bledel, Lauren Graham, Jared Padalecki, Chad Michael Murray, Adam Brody, Matt Czuchry, Melissa McCarthy, and Milo Ventimiglia meaning that it contains an amazing cast. If you are someone who enjoys watching a good drama or romcom then this show is for you. It offers comfort and acts as an escape from reality. It makes you want a mother daughter relationship like Lorelai and Rory have. There are times when you just want to yell at the screen to tell Rory that she is making the wrong decision or should have chosen to do something else. The writing of the whole show is just mesmerizing. It gives a sense of family during the show when they have their weekly Friday Night Dinners too. These are just a few instances when the writer hooks you into loving the show. More importantly, after watching once you will automatically want to start it all over again. These are just a few reasons as to why you should take a chance on Gilmore Girls.
