Introduction
Many students have different perspectives on school, classes and courses, and what they like and dislike studying. With some one on one conversations with students from Hauppauge High School, I gathered some information regarding students favorite subjects, and why it is their favorite. To start off, I’ll share mine. I personally like English. English can be creative, which I like, but it can also be straightforward. I tend to find myself leaning towards the writing part of English, although throughout High school, I have learned to enjoy reading and analyzing more and more. Another reason I like English is because I like looking into the deeper meaning of texts and creating my own analysis and thoughts. English allows me to be creative and learn new things in a more natural way rather than trying to remember statistics or facts.
What do the Students Say?
My first interview was with Layna, a current senior at Hauppauge High School. She finds interest in nature and learning about the earth. She also has a love for animals. During our interview, she said “I think my favorite subject is science because I like learning about bio and animals”. She shared how she has always loved animals, and science allows her to dive deeper into the more specific facts and information about animals and their life. Alongside that she specifically stated her love for biology, which especially talks about living things. Secondly, I spoke with Emily and she said “My favorite subjects are math and science.” She continued to tell me how she loved taking the AP Biology course along with IB Math. She also said “I think these are my favorite subjects because I love to problem solve and work with numbers.” Her love for math and science is deep routed within her interest in interpreting and systematic work. Emily is also a senior at Hauppauge High School, and expressed a few things regarding her journey after graduation, “I am super excited to continue these subjects in college while I major in education!” she told me excitedly. Lastly, I spoke with Mary. She said she likes math classes and that it is her favorite subject. As we spoke more, she said to me “It just comes more naturally to me than science or English”. Her love for math comes from her ability and the natural flow of the class in comparison to other classes that she doesn’t have as much of an interest in.
Overview
It looks like there is some variety in the classes that students at Hauppauge like and how different people find interest in different things. Something noticeable was how the students either liked being creative or more straightforward and that said a lot about their favorite subjects. Some students even want to continue learning and maybe even make their career based on their favorite subjects.
