The novella Animal Farm, by George Orwell (1945) is extremely well written and extraordinary. It’s extremely allegorical meaning it has a moral story and multiple meanings. It also contains a notable amount of symbolism. The novella uses simple language and is historically accurate. Those who like history should read this novella. The main message in Animal Farm is to not trust anyone blindly.
The Plot
At the beginning of the novella, the animals are hungry, and famished, because of their forgetful and irresponsible owner, Farmer Jones. He is described as a cruel and abusive owner who consistently gets drunk. They later rebel against him and take over the farm. Pigs are the smartest, clever, and manipulative animals on the farm. Ergo why they took leadership, it was run mainly by Napoleon and Snowball, Squealer being Napoleon’s assistant. At the beginning of the rebellion, they made the 7 commandments of Animalism, which included that All animals are equal. In the beginning of the book, it is briefly mentioned that Napoleon took the mother’s pups away to teach them, later it is revealed that he raised them to be like bodyguards (Stalins, secret police force) and chased Snowball. He ends up being cruel and more abusive than Jones. He kills the animals whenever they go against his rule, and changes the rules, saying “ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL BUT SOME ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS”. They start doing human activities like walking on two feet (holding a whip) and sleeping in beds isolated from the other animals.
My opinion/something I would change
In my opinion, this was a very good novella, it shows how people during the Russian Revolution were treated. Online it has a rating of 4.3 out of 5. However, I think it deserves higher than that. If there’s one thing that I would change in the novella, it would be to make the novel a little longer with the animals rebelling once again.
