This is my thinking:
When the question of what I would change about school is asked, there aren’t many things that I would consider changing about school, but the one thing that comes to mind is I would make gym classes optional for students. As long as they at least play one sport. I think this is a fair option because not all students are competitive when it comes to sports or games. I don’t enjoy gym class. I’m the type of person who would rather run or walk. In addition, I think that if schools don’t want to take away the class then always giving them another option would be a good idea. Overall there isn’t anything I would consider changing about school.
Interviews and Quotes
Students, when asked, have things that they think should be changed. They each have their reasons. Some people think that times should be changed or even changes should be made to lunch procedures. Everyone has their viewpoints when it comes to the question: What would you change about school and why? Samyu said, “I would change the lunch line so there is a better way for everyone to get there quicker.” This is a great point because firstly, some kids don’t have a lunch period to take time out to eat. Secondly, some students run out of time to eat. Laila also brought up start times. She stated, “One thing I would change about this school is the start time, I would make the elementary time earlier and high school later because it would make it easier for older kids to get to school on time instead of late.” Yashvi said, ”I wish we had later start times so kids can sleep later.” So it’s common for people to want the start times later. Another student Manha said, ”I think that the school security measures should be changed or even advanced because it would ultimately increase the safety the school has and the trust that the students know that they are safe. We should do this because it would help, school violence and other things that are not permitted in school.” This is a great change because now when watching the news this fact comes up in many different schools nationwide. There is an increase in violence among students. Lastly, Sam said ”No swimming because it shouldn’t be mandatory for freshmen, only those who wish to learn.” Overall this is what a few students think should change about school. Also, it provides reasons why they believe this.
Facts and Statistics:
Many different news companies have taken on the ongoing question of what would students change about school, and why? The New York Times has talked to students in some schools and found that the common things that they would change are less pressure, taking away tests, and even preparing them for real life. The New York Times stated, “One of the biggest flaws in the American education system is the amount of pressure that students have on them to do well in school, so they can get into a good college.” So what they’re saying is that the pressure that’s put on students causes them to feel like they’re not good enough. Some teachers and schools are making their students feel like they are not good enough. “U.S. public high schools began their day at 8:00 a.m., on average. Forty-two percent of schools started earlier, including 10 percent—predominantly suburban schools—before 7:30 a.m.” (neaToday) Another thing that students would when asked is for a later start time. It’s proven above how many high schools start either before eight or at eight. This is some statistics about what students around the U.S. would change about school.
