About the author:
Khaled Hosseini is a very successful author from Afghanistan. He writes in a formal and sympathetic tone, with such descriptive details that it gives the reader a perfect idea of the whole scene. Hosseini has even won the Indies Choice Book Award. The majority of Hosseini’s books take place in Afghanistan which include A Thousand Splendid Suns, Kite Runner, And the Mountains Echoed, and Sea Prayer.
What is the book about?
A Thousand Splendid Suns is a book that educates people about the struggle of women in Afghanistan. The book starts with different yet similar stories and backgrounds of two young Afghani women. One whose name is Mariam has gone through a rough childhood with a father who neglects and ignores her and a mom who is harsh and ends up committing suicide. They live in a kolba (which is a small house made out of mud and brick). Layla is the other story who is educated and middle class. After her brothers died in the war her mom has been depressed. She does not get out of bed and is described as always wearing black.
My Opinion/Conclusion:
In conclusion, it is a very deep and emotional book. Hosseini makes the reader feel sympathetic and pity towards the main characters. It shows how any type of kindness can have a big effect. Personally, I believe that this is the best book I have ever read, and many other people agree. Online A Thousand Splendid Suns has a rating of 4.9 out of 5.
