On February 6th an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck South Turkey and Western Syria. This was then followed by another earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 centered in Elbistan City. This resulted in a fatality of 50,000, and 100,000 injured. This was the highest magnitude Turkey has had since 1939. 16% of the Turkish population was affected by this tragedy, leaving 1.5 million people homeless.
The question most of us might be asking is how do we help them? If you are a common citizen it can be helpful if you can donate money, so that giving supplies is not as expensive. According to the CNN’s Taylor Romine and Sara Smart, “The Los Angeles County Fire Department is sending 78 members of their Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team to Turkey” and Mayumi Maruyama in Japan stated “Japan has sent the country’s Disaster Relief Rescue Team in response to the earthquake in Turkey, according to a Monday statement by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs”.
It has been around 7 months since the Turkey-Syria earthquake. The earthquake caused long term impacts to many, since most people have lost their house and close relatives. Overall Turkey has been in a better position ever since countries like Japan and Los Angeles availed them.
